A bigger discount percentage can still produce a higher bill. Compare the same items, quantities and delivery service after the code is applied, then check the amount due at the last step before payment.
For each option, record the merchandise price after discounts, shipping, mandatory fees and applicable tax. Keep a promised future reward separate from the money you pay now. These are different kinds of savings.
Use this comparison: discounted merchandise + shipping + fees + tax = amount due today. If a reward is issued later, note when it becomes available and what another purchase would require; do not subtract it from today's bill as though it were an immediate discount.
These are hypothetical prices and rules, not merchant offers. The same basket costs $80. Option A gives 10% off, leaving $72, but adds $9 shipping. Its subtotal with shipping is $81. Option B gives no merchandise discount and includes shipping, producing $80. Before tax and other fees, Option B is $1 cheaper.
The relevant question is which total you can actually obtain for your address and cart. A code may also change whether your basket still meets a shipping minimum. Do not assume every retailer calculates the threshold in the same way.
Suppose your wanted items cost $44 and shipping is $7. The total is $51 before tax. A hypothetical $50 shipping threshold looks close, but the smallest useful extra item costs $12. Adding it produces a $56 cart with free shipping. You have spent $5 more, even though shipping disappeared.
That may be reasonable if you needed the extra item anyway. If you do not need it, the lower-cost original basket is the clearer comparison. Membership charges should be included too when joining is necessary to obtain the offer.
Real stores can use more specific calculations. Bean Box's shipping FAQ calculates its coffee minimum by roaster, rather than simply combining every item in a cart.
